VA Benefits for Long-Term Care: Aid & Attendance

Thousands of veterans and their surviving spouses are entitled to a VA benefit they’ve never heard of. The VA’s enhanced pension, commonly called Aid & Attendance, can provide meaningful monthly income to help pay for in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home care. Who May Qualify

Service: generally 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period, and a discharge that was not dishonorable. The veteran did not need to serve in combat.
Care need: the applicant needs help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, or medication management, or resides in assisted living or a nursing home.
Financial limits: the VA applies a net-worth limit and reviews asset transfers made within a three-year look-back period, so how assets are structured matters.
Surviving spouses: may qualify on a deceased veteran’s service, which many widows and widowers never realize.
