How an Ohio Pet Trust Works

Ohio law expressly authorizes trusts for the care of animals. Your pet trust names a caregiver to take your pets in, a trustee to manage the money you set aside, and instructions covering everything from daily routines and vet preferences to end-of-life decisions. Because the trustee and caregiver can be different people, there’s built-in accountability that a simple “please take my dog” request in a will can never provide.

Why a Will Isn't Enough

A will only takes effect after probate, which can leave your pet in limbo for months, and a will can’t supervise how money is spent. A pet trust takes effect immediately, works during your incapacity as well as after death, and lasts for your pet’s entire lifetime, with leftover funds going to family or a charity you choose (many clients pick an animal rescue).
